The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR) established the Policy and Coordination Unit for Women in Agriculture (PCUWA) in 1992, aimed at improving the quality of women’s lives in rural areas by encouraging initiatives that contribute to the socio- economic empowerment of women and to rural sustainable development.
PCUWA’s mission is to foster the integration of women’s concerns and needs into agricultural policies and rural development programmes promoted by the MALR.
The mandate of the Unit includes, inter alia, providing technical support to MALR on gender-sensitive analysis and planning; coordinating and cooperating with NGOs, agribusiness, governmental bodies, national and international organizations to enhance women’s role in agriculture; establishing mechanisms to ensure higher participation of rural women in the agriculture sector; increasing access for rural women to suitable agricultural technologies, extension services, credit, agricultural inputs and marketing and export services.
