PALESTINE

The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) is the main governmental body that leads agricultural development in the country and is the umbrella under which the civil society and the international institutions work. The Ministry’s vision is “sustainable agriculture capable of competing locally and globally and effectively contributing to strengthen i) food security, ii) the bond between Palestinians and their land as well as their sovereignty over resources, towards building an independent Palestinian State”.

To ensure gender equitable outcomes, a Gender Unit has been established under the Minister’s office. It includes two departments: (1) Gender Mainstreaming and Development, whose main duties include developing the policies and procedures to include gender issues across all MoA’s tasks; identifying gender sectoral issues; ensuring that the MoA’s budget responds to the needs and priorities of women with clear items and indicators and (2) Department of Audit and Follow-up from a gender perspective. Its main duties include developing quantitative and qualitative indicators to evaluate the extent of gender mainstreaming in the policies and programmes of the Ministry of Agriculture; evaluating programmes implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture from a gender perspective to determine the extent to which women benefit from these programmes, and preparing periodic reports to illustrate the progress made on gender issues in the Ministry’s plans and programmes.
