Training course on buffaloes husbandry in Sennouris and Yossuff ELSeddik districts, ELfayoum Governorate – Egypt

The Training course on “Buffaloes husbandry” took place in Elfayoum Governorate, between January and February 2020, for a total duration of 11 days, involving 65 rural women. The training, that was held by specialists in animal production, extension services and manufacturing, included both theoretical and practical sessions, thanks to visits to farms located in ElTowfikia, AbdalAlla Elliwa and ElNazla villages.

The training sessions were based on the “learn by doing” approach, using different tools to actively engage the participants, such as practical demonstrations, group-working, discussion groups, extension educational videos, photos, drawings and the use of different training materials that were also distributed among the participants for future reference.

More in details, the training aimed at:

  • Increase knowledge on buffalo’s husbandry and caring before and after calving
  • Enable rural women trainees to use local resources (for example, common agricultural crops for feeding) for buffaloes husbandry;
  • Increase technical skills on managing basic health issues of the animals, including treatment with medicinal plants, disease prevention, vaccinations;
  • Build awareness and self-confidence for rural women as leaders in buffalo’s husbandry dairy production.

Women trainees highly appreciated the combination of theoretical and practical sessions, and not only participated actively to the training, but also showed the willingness to transfer the knowledge they have acquired during the training to other women and men of their villages.
